Introduction and Learning Objectives

Today's topic is SMART targets. By the end of the session you should:

  • Understand how to use SMART targets.
  • Set one SMART target to deal with a practical issue.

Why SMART Targets

These are often used in school and learning about them is useful for teaching assistants both for work in school and for their own study skills. This method can sometimes even be used by a whole school staff to move towards important changes. It's a powerful tool and one that is very useful.

In this extract from a learning journal you can see there is a final column for the Action Plan - the things to learn or do next. Using the SMART target system helps us to follow through on Action Plans.

From Action Plan to Targets

These are the points from my action plan:

  • Discuss with the teacher how he would like me to react in that situation.
  • Learn more about managing children's behaviour

Here's what I did next:

S- specificM- measurable A - achievable R- realisticT- timed
Talk to the teacher Notes of conversation in my LJ Yes - with careful planning Yes - need to arrange to do it when teacher is freeBy Friday

Read a chapter from Behaviour Recovery by Bill Rogers Mindmap in my LJ Yes - I can borrow the book from the staff room Yes - one chapter will not take too longBy next ICT session (Tuesday)

Activity

Two Minutes:

In pairs, work with the person next to you.

Use this method to practice setting a target on the table in Image:Microteach SMART targets - Usefulwiki.pdf

Choose one SMART target to deal with between you.

Remember if a target seems too big break it down into smaller tasks.

  • You want to learn how to send your homework by e-mail
  • Your payslip was wrong
  • You are told you need to improve your computer skills
  • You don't understand how to fill in a form
  • You need to know where text books are kept
  • You have someone in your class who has dyslexia and you don't know much about it.
  • Someone has been rude to you and you are unsure what to do.

Reflection on Learning

3 Minutes

Each pair to share with the larger group one thing they have learned about using SMART targets.
