This advice is for the first time you look at this book with the child.
When to use this book:
Use this book with a child who is using 'meaning'(semantic) and/or structural (syntatic) cues, particularly pictures and repetitive language patterns. Ideal for those who need to improve confidence. The story also gives lots of scope for expression. Good for a child who responds well to a cosy atmosphere. This book might seem a little young but the child tends to identify with the older owl brother or sister and the reading age is firmly in the mid-range. Younger boys seem to enjoy this book too but not beyond about Year 3.
Introduction: ( a two sentence sum up)
"I thought you'd like this story because it's got great pictures. It's all about what happens to baby owls at night when their Mum flies off to find their dinner."
(The book should be in the child's hand by the end of the first sentence).
Let the child look through the book at the pictures and discuss the pictures and why the background is black.
Embedding hard words and punctuation
Get the child to focus in on the first two pages. Ask her to point out the names of the owl babies. You may need to pick out the word 'owl' as well. Talk about speech marks. Check the child knows what they mean.
Now she's identified the hardest words on the page ask her to read you the text. Discreetly note good points to mention when she's finished. Encourage expression when reading Bill's words.
Stop while she's still engaged & enjoying the book. Two double pages is best at this stage.
