  • The student will be familiar with the contents of their setting's Health and Safety policy documents.
  • The student will improve their knowledge base on the skills and strategies used by readers.

  • The student will learn how to use keywords to produce notes on a text.

Activity

In Pairs

  • Read through the passage above together.
  • Discuss why schools need these sorts of laws.
  • Talk about what these laws might mean for teaching assistants.
  • Make a list of 5 things that could happen in a classroom, times when these laws might be important.
  • Choose one of you to feedback to the group

Using Keywords to Make Notes

11:45 - 12:15 Scaffold on white board using a passage and group input.

Activity

Working in pairs.

  • Using your highlighted notes from last week (Cues and Strategies of Effective Readers)produce bullet pointed notes or a mind map on the topic in your own words.
  • Rehearse how you would expand these notes into a short talk on the subject (up to 4 minutes).
  • Be sure to add examples of your own experiences of hearing readers.

Feedback

  • Give one positive comment
  • One action point for improvement

Homework

12:25 - 12:30

  • Make brief notes on your school's Health and Safety guideline and show how these relate to the laws.

The notes may either be bullet points or a mind map

  • Describe in notes two occasions in school when actions have, or might have, been taken based on the Health and Safety policy.

(Occasions could include: playground or classroom incidents, lunch/cafeteria hall, assemblies, school trips, actions following breaking of school rules relating to Health and Safety etc.)

  • Give 3 reasons why it is important to allow children to sometimes take risks and explain how we can help them to do this in a safe environment.
Use examples from your own experience where possible.

For Unit 4 (Reading Skills)

  • Write a description of how you hear a child read: how to start off, the kinds of things to talk about, what to do when the child gets stuck etc.
