School Policy on Writing

You need to find out your school policy on handwriting. If your school does not have a policy you may use the sample one provided during Session 21.

  • What style is taught?
  • At what stage is cursive (joined)handwriting introduced?

Explain what your school's policy on handwriting is and how it influences what happens in your classroom.


Case Study

Consider the case study (Niles)

Explain:

  • Why he might be having problems
  • What you could do to help him.
  • What you would do if he was in year 5
  • Why would that be different?

(300-500 words)

Literacy Homework 3

In paragraphs:

  • Explain in general terms how spelling strategies are used in your school (use your notes on your school literacy policy).
  • Give a detailed description of how this works in your classroom, give examples of strategies used and outcomes achieved.
  • Choose, and explain, an example from your learning journal of a time when you have worked with a child or group of children on spelling strategies.
  • Evaluate the strategy you used.

300 - 500 words


Literacy Homework 4

Write a reflective account of an occasion when you have assisted a teacher in the planning and implementation of an activity to support writing development.

  • Explain the Learning Objectives
  • Describe how you were involved in the planning
  • Describe what you did during the activity to support the children.
  • Explain how you provided feedback to the teacher
  • Evaluate your role in the activity and explain how you could improve your practice next time.


Literacy Homework 5

  • Write notes on the stages of development of speaking and listening skills (See Handout- Literacy S & L skills page 10)
  • Write notes on examples of best practice of speaking and listening (section above and Handout example activities pages 2,4 6 & 8)
  • Observe a child in your class
  • Write brief notes answering as many as you can of the questions on page 10 for your year from the hand out.

The kind of note is illustrated in the lozenges on the handout.
