Dealing with common problems:

When a computer or white board doesn't work, before you do anything else

  • Check that everything is plugged in
  • Check that sockets are switched on
  • If in doubt Shut Down and Re-start
No Sound
  • Check the in control panel when the sound doesn't work. It's often just defaulted to 'mute'.
  • Check if the computer or white board screen has a volume dial. Turn it on/up!
  • Make sure white board speakers are plugged in and switched on
Printer Fails
  • Check it has been sent to the right printer
  • Check for a paper jam.
  • Some networks can't cope if too many jobs arrive at once.
  • Check there is paper!
Can't Log On
  • Check that the number lock is on and the caps lock is off
  • Check for spaces in the user name (before or after the name)

Displays, Labels and Worksheets

12:00 - 1:00

Practical session. Have a play!

Try

  • Insert a picture/clipart into a word document and play with it.
  • Make worksheets by making borders or using background images (watermark).
  • Group and un-group images on word. ie by pressing shift and clicking each image then going to 'draw' bottom left of document and clicking group.

Create A Banner for A Display

Your Text is:

"Making Titles"
  • Open Word
  • Change to layout to landscape
  • Change font - either use something plain like Ariel, or choose a fancy font. Some schools have handwriting fonts or Sassoon.
  • Change the font size by typing in the number you want. You can type in 200 and press enter to create massive text.
  • Change the colour of the text
  • Use print preview to check how it will look. It cost nothing to check but ink is expensive!
  • Make any changes and re-check in pre-view
  • Make sure landscape is selected in 'print preferences'
  • Print
  • Write your name in pencil on the back of your work and hand it in.

When you've finished:

  • Try using WordArt to make titles. Watch out some styles distort text too much.

Other ideas:

  • Print drawer or tray labels
  • Using http://www.blockposters.com/default.aspx to create giant posters
  • Using the Prt Scrn button on your keyboard to take a copy of your screen. Open up 'Paint' and paste then edit if required and save as a jpg file.
  • How to select text or copy graphics from a PDF file. This can be so useful.
  • How to write a letter or memo in Word
  • The undo facility - how to use it when you mess something up.
