Introduction
10:00 - 10:15
- Registration
- Mock exam results
- Collection of homework
- Shape of the morning
Learning Objectives
- Students should be familiar with the risk assessment process
- Students should be able to identify important elements of relevant legislation.
- Students will be able to identify key words in exam questions
- Students will complete their simulations of maths activities.
Revision Unit 2
10:15 - 10:20
Areas of weakness from mock exam.
1.Exam technique
You need to read questions more carefully! People got things wrong when I know they knew the answers. Everyone made some silly mistakes.
We will work on this after coffee
2.Unit 2 - risk assessments and legislation
Basically unit 2 (some unit 1 overlap)
- Risk Assessment forms
- Legislation - the Acts
Risk Assessment
!0:20 - 10:40
Learning Objective - to revise main features of risk assessment.
Sample Risk Assessment Forms
A Risk Assessment form needs to be filled in before any activity in school or on visits where there may be a risk of injury to children or staff. They are usually the responsibility of the teacher involved but you might be asked to fill in the details after discussion and the teacher will sign the form.
Risk Assessment forms are a legal requirement.
The four questions a simple risk assessment form asks:
- Where?
- What?
- How?
It may also ask
- When?
In particular this is important for one off activities and school trips
Using sample form and student answers model on IWB
Scenario
Year two (30 children) are making puppets next Tuesday.
They will be in their normal classroom (Room 6) with teacher, their TA and a parent helper.
They will be using sewing needles and pins. They have not used sharp needles before.

Important Acts
10:40 - 10 :50
Learning Objective - to revise the basics of relevant legislation
Children's Act (2004)
Five Every Child Matters outcomes:
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic well-being
SEN and Disability Act (2001)
(See hand out Stages of the statementing process)
Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (Amended 2002)
Inclusion and the move to mainstream
Data Protection Act (1998)
Deals mostly with confidentiality and record keeping in schools
Equal Opportunities Act (2004)
Mostly deals with discrimination on grounds of
- race (racist remarks, race based bullying etc)
or
- gender(unfair provision, sexist language etc)
Incidents should be challenged and records may be kept under some circumstances. Record keeping is at the discretion of the school.
Deciding to keep records is not a TA responsibility. Filling in records might be.
Group Activity
10:50 - 11:15
In two groups
- Read the passage
- Look at the key word handout
- Larger words appear more often.
- Choose 5 keywords
- Write down two sentences for each that includes an important fact about that key word.
- Use the passage and your knowledge to help you
The following key word list has been taken from this passage:
Inclusion and Equality
SEN and Disability Act 2001
Made it more likely that children would all be educated in mainstream schools. Promotes inclusion in education as a basic principle.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (Amended 2002)
- It is unlawful for schools to discriminate against disabled pupils or prospective pupils
- All schools are required to have a plan to improve access to the environment, curriculum and written materials for any disabled pupils
- All schools have a duty to make sure they do not disadvantage disabled pupils.
Inclusion has come to be applied to all special educational needs of children in most schools not just those children with legal statements.
Any child may have 'special needs' at times during their school life and should have a right to have those needs met.
Human Rights
- All children have a right to learn and play together
- Children should not be discriminated against because of learning difficulties or disabilities
- Inclusion is concerned with improving schools for staff as well as pupils.
All schools are required to have clearly stated anti-racism and anti-bullying policies.
Racism and bullying should be challenged.Racist incidents in schools fall under the wider anti-racist legislation.
Equal Rights
- Children do better in inclusive settings both academically and socially
- Children should not need to be separated to achieve adequate educational provision.
- Inclusive education is a more efficient use of educational resources.
Keywords - use the keyword list and sentences to prompt your revision.
They should also be added to Unit 2 in your portfolio.
Remember this applies to any notes you make to help with your revision.
Sharing Your Work
11:15 - 11:30
Groups to report back to class
All students to participate in reporting sentences.
Coffee
11:30 - 11:45 sharp!
Exam Technique
11:45 - 12:00
Somethings you just have to know as facts.
Things like the meaning of SENCO or what an Educational Psychologist does.
Other things you can work out from careful reading of the question and using common sense.
Reading questions carefully.
Exam questions are like poetry - every word matters.
- Spotting key words - often verbs (doing words) or nouns (names of things)
- Look out for NOT - if it appears make sure you understand what the question is asking for.
- Use elimination, use logic to help you work out answers.
- Look at each possible answer and turn the question into a statement with it.
Example
- Which of the following is not part of a teaching assistant's duties?
- A.Tidying the classroom after activities
- B.Preparing resources before a class
- C.Choosing worksheets for the class to use
- D.Photocopying worksheets
Becomes:
- A Tidying the classroom after activities is not part of a teaching assistant's duties
- B Preparing resources before a class is not part of a teaching assistant's duties
- C.Choosing the worksheets for the class to use is not part of a teaching assistant's duties
- D.Photocopying worksheets is not part of a teaching assistant's duties
Working out the answer
Read the statements back to yourself.
Which sentence makes the most sense?
Look at the verbs (doing words) tidying, preparing and photocopying are all words that describe things TAs are expected to do.
Choosing and the (whole) class should jump out at you screaming - teacher's responsibility!
Maths Simulated Activities
12:00 - 12:45
In 2 groups
Collection of Units 4 and 5
As requested last week I will be collecting everything you have so far for Units 4 and 5 (Unit 6 in G's case).
I will not be returning homework done so far for these units.
The IV will be doing an interim examination of these units this week.
This is to check my marking rather than your work.
Please make sure I have everything you have done for Units 4 and 5 before you leave.
This includes any planning for simulations observed today.
Home work
