Group discussion - phonics and the whole word approach - re-cap from work on reading

  • What is phonics?
  • Spelling strategies and word families
  • The move to a more phonics based approach.
  • Introduction of schemes like Units of Sound
  • Use of drill based ICT resources
  • Magical Spelling

The High Frequency Word List

  • Based on research that identified the most commonly used words in English
  • Year based
  • Progressively harder
  • Part of National Curriculum
  • Form a bank of known words each year that allow children to concentrate on learning new words
  • Includes some words each year that break phoneme rules and must be learnt by sight.

See Handout 1 - High Frequency Word list by year.

Word Families

Examples of word families:

  • bun, sun, fun
  • might, sight, fight

Gets more complex as children move up through the school and introduces concepts like prefix and suffix

Resources

Brainstorm a list of resources used in school to support spelling strategies.

Add to wiki if possible

Numeracy

10:50 - 11:30

Learning Objectives

  • Students will have a working definition of numeracy
  • They will have a basic understanding of the stages of numeracy development
  • They will explore how the stages of development impact on numeracy strategies used in their setting

Not just number and shape

Discussion on defining numeracy - what does it mean?

What are the Primary Numeracy Skills?

  • Counting,calculating, checking results,
  • Sequencing, estimating,measuring
  • Problem solving
  • Identifying shapes
  • Making shapes and models
  • Identifying patterns
  • Symmetry
  • Tesselation
  • Using Mathematical language to explain methods and reasoning
  • Accurate reading and interpretation of numbered scales
  • Using units of measure
  • Recording and interpretation of data

All visited in ways that are age and key stage appropriate.

Short group discussion

How are fractions covered in the range of years covered by our group?

Why the differences?

How Numeracy Skills Develop

Do we already know any theories that can help us with this? See Hand out 2 Stages of Numeracy Development

Looking at the Numeracy Strategy

Key Principles

  • Daily maths lesson
  • Direct teaching
  • Mental calculation
  • Controlled differentiation

Primary Framework

A new name but a similar approach.

The planning structure for each year is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for each year group. A block is designed to cover the equivalent of 6 weeks or 9 weeks of teaching. The blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Workshop Activities

11:45 - 12:30

Literacy group work

Notes produced in this group work will form the basis of your homework.

In your group

  • Produce a list of different strategies used to support spelling in Key Stages 1 and 2
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy?
  • How might the disadvantages be overcome?

Literacy Homework Task

In paragraphs:

  • Explain in general terms how spelling strategies are used in your school (use your notes on your school literacy policy).
  • Give a detailed description of how this works in your classroom, give examples of strategies used and outcomes achieved.
  • Choose, and explain, an example from your learning journal of a time when you have worked with a child or group of children on spelling strategies.
  • Evaluate the strategy you used.

300 - 500 words (5 marks per section)

Numeracy group work

Notes from this section will form the basis of your numeracy homework

In your group

  • Discuss and agree a working definition of numeracy.
  • Produce a list of the stages of numeracy skills development.
  • Identify a range of factors and problems that may affect this development

Numeracy Homework

Write in paragraphs:

  • Define the term numeracy as it is used in the primary setting
  • Explain how numeracy skills develop
  • List some factors that may cause problems in the development of these skills
  • Describe strategies that can help to overcome them.

(300 - 500 words)

Case Study

Margie is in Year Two. The rest of her class are using cubes to practise number bonds to 10. Margie keeps getting the wrong answers. She seems confused and you notice she keeps loosing count of the cubes. How might you help her? Suggest two possible strategies and evaluate them.
