Learning Objectives

  • The student will continue to identify the personal skills and experiences of Teaching Assistants (1.1.3, 1.3.1)
  • The student will use their learning journal to begin to compare and evaluate their own skills against those of a Teaching Assistant (1.1.3 skills audit)

Introduction

10- 10.15 Today we are looking at you and your own learning. You should start a section in your folder for recording your personal learning. You will use this to show the progress you are making. I will ask people to share what they found in the Learning Styles Quiz with the group so that we can build up a picture of what kinds of learning styles we have. We are just going to look at what you put in the table at the end:

10:45- 11:15

Work in pairs to use this method on your notes from your learning journal. Make a bullet pointed list of the things each of you need to know/work on/improve.

11:15 - 11:25

Share bullet points with the group.

Short discussion of points raised.

Where can you find information to help you?

Job Descriptions

Introducing note taking

11:40 - 12:00

Looking at job descriptions and Teaching Assistant guidelines.

Show and discuss a model job description and guidelines.

  • Why are they in difficult language?
  • How could we make them easier to understand?
  • What can you do when you don't understand?

Introducing Key Skills

12:00 -12:30

Show Key skills level 2 tracking sheets and explain that what we do in the course anyway will help them to meet the criteria. It will not mean you need to do any extra work. You will have to keep track of where in your folder the evidence for each of the key skills is and it's much easier to do that as we go along. I will remind you when we cover key skills so that you can make a note on your sheets. You will need to start a section in your file for these Key Skills sheets.

Homework

  • Make a list of the skills and qualities needed by a teaching assistant in your school. This can be bullet points, a table or a mind map. (Use the your notes from the videos Session 1B to help you. You could also ask the Teaching Assistants and the teacher you are working with for their opinions)

Bring this next week and be prepared to talk through it with the group.

  • Write a letter to apply for a job as a teaching assistant. Say which skills you already have and which you need to acquire. (Use either the job description from your placement or the model one provided in the course notes. Concentrate on the skills and qualities sections. Go through carefully and cover each point.)

Hand in to me next Tuesday (27/11/07) so that I can start to monitor your progress.

You can e-mail me a copy if you'd rather. (Linda.Hartley@gmail.com)

  • Continue to keep your learning journal

Remember the e mail group if you get stuck, want help or just want to chat!

Individual Learning Plans

12:30 - 1:00 Students in pairs quietly working through the model job description making notes while I work with individuals on their ILPs. You can use the books, magazines and the internet to help you understand.

Next week

  • We will start by pooling your lists of skills and qualities needed by a Teaching Assistant (so don't forget them!)
  • We will begin to explore barriers to learning.
  • We will also look at how best to work with readers, as that is something most of you have been asked to do.
