FORCES LESSON PLAN

Learning Objectives:

All the children should understand that some objects change shape when forces are applied

Most of the children will use a range of adjectives to describe the forces they apply

Some of the children may be able to identify the forces applied as broadly either 'push' or 'pull'

Resources

  • Junk objects (e.g. drinks can, plasticine, drinking straw, elastic band, foil, wool, tights, paper, pipe cleaner and paper bag) that can change shape when a force is applied and the Changing Shape worksheet.


Preparation:

  • Gather the items for each activity


Activity:

  • Changing shape
  • Give the children objects to explore.
  • Encourage them to try and change the shape of the objects.
  • Discuss how they were changed introducing language such as twist, bend, squeeze, stretch and squash.
  • Record these outcomes on the Changing Shape worksheet.

Extension

  • Explain that these types of actions are either pushes or pulls.
  • Ask the children to identify which force is used for the different actions.
