When to use this book:
Use this book with a child who is gaining in confidence and independence. The child will need to be using a full range of cues. The book is full of puns, visual jokes, sound-based jokes and gramatical jokes. A joy, for the right child, you may need to let them keep it for quite a long time. More than one child has begged for a copy of their very own from Mum! One ex-shy, ex-reluctant reader learned several of the poems off by heart and performed them in a whole school assembly
Introduction: ( a two sentence sum up)
"This book is full of really funny poems. There are all sorts of different kinds of jokes in here."
(The book should be in the child's hand by the end of the first sentence).
Let the child look through the book at the poems and discuss the way the different fonts, sizes of text and the strange arrangement of some pages. Most children find this very interesting. Notice which kinds of jokes they get straight away.
Embedding hard words
Having chosen a poem from the book, by this stage you should be able to ask the child which bits they think they are going to find tricky. Support them whilst they use their strategies to work out the words.
