When to use this book:
Use this book with a child who is using visual cues and rhythmic language. The child should have a preference for realistic books. Often enjoyed by both boys and girls, the language has a hypnotic quality. May become a firm favourite with some children. It's a good book to quieten things down and evoke a thoughtful mood.
Introduction: ( a two sentence sum up)
"I thought you'd like this book because you've got a baby brother (or sister) and you know what it's like to be awake when everyone else is asleep. I know you like good pictures and the ones in this book are very special."
(The book should be in the child's hand by the end of the first sentence).
Let the child look through the book at the pictures and discuss the different images. Most children find the idea of the secret world of the night very appealing. (if you've got the choice of book right!)
Embedding hard words
Have a look at the first couple of pages with the child. Talk about the first picture making sure you mention any words you think they might not know. We are making progress now so we expect the child to do a bit more of the work.
Ask them to spot any words they think might be tricky. Get them to point to the word. Get them to explain how they might tackle it. If needs be ask them if they know the first sound, are there any little words hiding in the big word?
Stop while she's still engaged & enjoying the book. One or possibly two double pages is best even at this stage.
