I am not sleepy and I will not go to bed.

This advice is for the first time you look at this book with the child.
When to use this book:
Use this book with a child who is using visual cues and likes looking carefully at text. The child should have a preference for funny but realistic books. Gender doesn't seem to be a big issue with these books.
Introduction: ( a two sentence sum up)
"Have you seen Charlie & Lola on TV? Well there are lots of books about them too. This one is about all the reasons Lola can think of for why she can't go to bed yet. I thought you'd like it because it's funny and I know you're a big sister like Charlie."
(The book should be in the child's hand by the end of the first sentence).
Let the child look through the book at the pictures and discuss the way the different fonts, sizes of text and strange arrangement of some pages. Most children find this very appealing. (if you've got the choice of book right!)
Embedding hard words
Get the child to focus in on the first two pages. Get her to point out the names Charlie and Lola. Mention the giraffes in the picture. Ask if she knows what sound "giraffes" starts with, you may then need a short discussion of the soft "g" sound. Ask her to find the word "giraffes" on the page. If she picks out another word make a discreet note of her miscue. Once she's found the word do the same thing again with "pyjamas".
Now she's identified the hardest words on the page ask her to read you the text. Discreetly note her successes to mention when she's finished.
Stop while she's still engaged & enjoying the book. One or possibly two double pages is best at this stage.
