Theatre Breaks in London as a Gift

This is about booking theatre breaks in London not for oneself, but as a really special gift for someone who deserves it. I know that some people do this, and it’s a wonderful thing.

Just imagine receiving an email which reads:

The occasion is often a landmark wedding anniversary but it could be one of a couple’s birthday, a reward for some achievement or surviving an ordeal, or simply celebrating the fact that children are old enough to leave on their own so Mum and Dad can go away by themselves for the first time in many years. A smart hotel in London, dining out and a visit to a West End theatre to see one of the famous spectacular shows is about as romantic as you can get, and particularly appreciated by established couples.

Theatre Break Anniversary

In fact my parents organised a theatre break for their own golden wedding anniversary a few years back, which is partly where I get the idea from. They don’t come up to the city very often, but when they do they like to do it in style. Four nights in the Drury Lane hotel, top tickets for Les Mis and then they managed to get bargain same day tickets for a couple of other shows during their stay, as well as a bit of sightseeing and museum visiting. They couldn’t get enough of it.

Which London Theatre Show?

The only problem is finding out which show they would really like to see without spoiling the surprise, but I think most people should be able to do the detective work. Try talking about a show that somebody else you know has been to see, then observe reactions. Listen out for clues in discussions about drama or music. With some of the top shows you can’t go wrong anyway. For example anybody around the 50-55 age group is likely to have the necessary memories to really enjoy Monty Python’s “Spamalot”. Do they remember the 1950’s ? If so Hairspray or Jersey Boys could be the one. Abba was a popular vocal group in the 70’s that you either loved or hated, so Mamma Mia could be perfect, or not. Somebody who has read “Lord of the Rings” four times from cover to cover? Then that’s the show to see. For non musical lovers, a serious drama or comedy play may be appropriate. Or you might decide it’s best to simply ask them outright and be certain.

The great pleasure of being sent on a London Theatre break will be no less for the anticipation, so it doesn’t really matter how far in advance you book the show and hotel package. The gift could even be timed as a Christmas present, but with the actual theatre trip to be made later on in the year, during the long months of winter, for example, or for a date which means something special.

Travel to London theatre breaks

The central London hotels tend to charge an extra £25 a
day for car parking and the car wil not be much use anyway, what with the traffic restrictions, impossibility of parking and congestion charge so I would really advise booking train tickets at the same time. It’s more of a relaxing break not to have to worry about your own transport and there’s a substantial discount on the rail component when you buy the whole theatre break in London deal together.
