Girl With a Pearl Earring opens at the Haymarket theatre in London’s West End on September 29th with previews from September 24th. It will run until November 1st.
The story of the Girl With a Pearl Earring
Girl With A Pearl Earring is the story of Johannes Vermeer and his growing obsession with his young servant Griet. Soon after her arrival in his household he has her helping in the studio and he starts to teach her to paint. She becomes his muse and his model. In secret Vermeer uses her as the model for one of his most famous works, Girl With A Pearl Earring (1665).
A novel, film and now a play all called “Girl With a Pearl Earring”
The play is based on a popular book by Tracy Chevalier. The book was written in 1998 and was a best seller. Chevalier said that she was inspired to write the story by a poster of the painting in her bedroom. She used what few facts were known of Vermeer’s life to create a fictional account of the creation of the painting.
Girl With a Pearl Earing was then adapted as a film in 2003, starring Colin Firth as the Vermeer and Scarlett Johansson as Griet. Chevalier sold the film rights and did not have any involvement in the film. However, she did approve of the outcome.
In this stage adaptation Vermeer is played by Adrian Dunbar (Boeing, Boeing) and Griet by Kimberly Nixon . Although she already has TV and film credits (Sophie in the TV series Cranford, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging) it will be Kimberley’s West End stage debut as she only graduated from the Royal Welsh College Of Music And Drama in 2007. The play has been adapted by David Joss Buckley.
Girl With a Pearl Earring is transferring to the West End in London after a short run at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.
