The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is the oldest working theatre in London, said to be haunted by the ghost of Joseph Grimaldi, the father of pantomime. Now booking Oliver! from December 2008 starring Rowan Atkinson as Fagin and Jodie Prenger winner of “I’d Do Anything” as Nancy.

Theatre breaks for Oliver! the musical are on sale now for dates between Friday January 16th 2009 right up until September 26th, that’s next year.

Oliver! is shaping up to be the biggest show in the West End, with massive exposure from the TV show “I’d do Anything” and opening at the Drury Lane Theatre Royal just at the busiest time of year for Christmas and New Year theatre breaks in London. If you book now, there’ll be the added excitement of watching the TV show to find out which Oliver and Nancy you are most likely to be seeing live on stage. What a treat!

Note that Rowan Atkinson will be Fagin in Oliver! the musical at New London Theatre until Saturday 18 July 2009, excluding Thursday 26 March until Saturday 5 April 2009 inclusive.

Lord of the Rings Closes in July. March 14, 2008

The Lord of The Rings currently at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane posted closing notices today and will end its West End run in July.
Cast and crew were told last night by Kevin Wallace. There will be smaller productions in Melbourne and Germany. It seems likely that the show has lost its entire investment in London!

It’s not a huge surprise as the transformation of the theatre is on a massive scale, with stage elements spilling out into the auditorium. The production seems to have relied too heavily on special effects and rather neglected the basics of gripping plot and character, not to mention the music.

I’ve made my feelings about LOTR before, still it is sad for the cast, some of whom I believe were excellent.

It does solve one problem though, Oliver! will begin rehearsals at the Theatre Royal some time in September or October.
