Jersey Boys Theatre Breaks
Jersey Boys Theatre Breaks in London
I watched theatregoers young and old coming out of the Prince Edward Theatre into Greek Street one summer evening and they were all oozing with enthusiasm for the show. So what may have seemed an unlikely musical for the London audiences has in fact turned out to be a strong favourite for theatre breaks. The Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons which captures the heady rush to stardom of a group of ordinary boys, and that’s the kind of story which, when done well, can take the audience on a journey that pulls all the emotions in succession. For people of the right age, just the sound of the music is highly evocative but for those too young to remember, the catchy tunes and rich harmonies quickly provoke the same, fingersnapping sense of fun.

Soho Theatre Breaks with the Jersey Boys
The fabulous Art Deco Prince Edward Theatre is right in the centre of London’s theatreland, by old Compton Street and Greek Street in the lively Soho area where the nightlife buzzes and a myriad of different cultures converge in the streets, shops and pavement bars.

You might try and get a hotel as close to the centre as possible, to take advantage of the freedom afforded by being able to stroll back to the quiet comfort of your private room at whatever time feel inclined to retire. The Strand Palace down by Charing Cross, St Giles Hotel up at Tottenham Court Road or any of the Drury Lane hotels would be perfect. The whole area is brimming with little bistros and restaurants all doing pre-theatre and post-theatre menus as well so whether you book in advance to eat at the hotel or else wander the streets until somewhere takes your fancy you’ll be guaranteed to find something to suit all tastes. Try not to spend too long making your mind up though!
Jersey Boys Cast
The London cast of Jersey Boys are all very talented singers and performers in their own right, and have got the Four Seasons’ sound down to a tee. They do also have a strong following amongst female fans who seem to split along lines of opinion as to which Jersey Boy is the best looking, but don’t worry – there are plenty of very attractive Jersey Girls in the stage show as well, and there are many more than just the main stars on stage for the breathtakingly choreographed set pieces.
Jersey Boys at West End Live
This promotional video follows the Jersey Boys backstage as they prepare for the West End Live event in 2008 and gives a great idea of the rapport and fun between the cast that undoubtedly helps to make the show the success it has become, putting Jersey Boys Theatre Breaks at the top of the London visitors choices.

Jersey Boys Live
The Jersey Boys were a hit at West End Live on both Saturday and Sunday, giving a taste of their popular show to a happy audience in Leicester Square. Here’s a video from the Saturday
The stars of the show clearly enjoyed playing to an outdoor crowd for a change but had to hurry back to the Prince Edward theatre straight afterwards.

Two great shows extended – new dates.
Joseph, currently one of the most popular shows in town, is still going strong and has just extended its run. The hit show at the Adelphi is now booking right through to January 2009! Joseph fans will be thrilled.
Jersey Boys, a newcomer that has quickly become a real favourite in London has also extended. Defying those who thought UK audiences wouldn’t warm to such an American story Jersey Boys has turned out to be a real winner with audiences. It is now booking until April 25th 2009 at the Prince Edward Theatre.
The Jersey Boys Opens – updated
“The Jersey Boys” musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons opens in London tonight the 18th March, and the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 ran an extended report this morning which sounded almost like an advertisement for the show. The reporting by Rebecca Jones included interviews with original Four Seasons members and excerpts from the hit songs.
There will also be a BBC Radio 4 feature after the show on Wednesday in Front Row, 7.15-7.45pm in which John Wilson reports from the British premiere of Jersey Boys.

Update:
Well, Front Row loved it!
This morning in the UK press the critics are sharply divided.
Charles Spencer in The Daily Telegraph loved it:
the best collection of pop hits since Mamma Mia.
and so did The Times
Oh what a night. High-octane show justifies its transfer.
But in The Evening Standard Nicholas de Jong said:
“Frankie goes to the West End … but will he last four seasons?….. I doubt whether Jersey Boys will make it over here … This may be an American import too many.
and in The Independent Paul Taylor was unimpressed:
The hits keep coming but Frankie frustrates….The idea of New Jersey and many of the cultural references fail to stir the requisite strength of emotion in a British audience

The Story of Jersey Boys
The story is a really engaging, classic rags to riches, tale of four, undeniably cute young men who can sing. Set in New Jersey in the early 60s it tells how the boys found fame and fortune and what they lost and gained along the way. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons may not ring bells at once for the younger UK musical fans. They might recognise some of the songs though:
There’s a bit of an early 60s revival going on in the UK music scene at the moment so the show might just hit a nerve with a younger audience.
Jersey Boys is Already a Broadway Hit
Like so many current West End musicals Jersey Boys comes to London as an already proven hit. It won Best Musical at the 2007 TONYS. Have a look at this – I think Jersey Boys could be a great ‘feel good’ evening out!
