Bat Out of Hell musical to play in London first!

Jim Steinman, (who wrote lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind) is working on a musical based on Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell” albums.

Steinman says that the musical, Bat Out of Hell, will be based on the songs from the three-album cycle. Described as a Cirque du Soleil-type spectacle, Steinman wrote both music and lyrics. Steinman is really excited that Stephen Clarke (Stripped) has signed on to collaborate with him on the musical’s book.

The APOLLO VICTORIA is probably our theatre choice! We’ll be replacing WICKED there. Its a gr8 theatre in a gr8 location! (Our final “due diligence” concerns making sure there’s ROOM ENUF for sets, 3D visuals, parkour, motorcycles, massive dance pieces, gymnastics, etc. We WERE going to build our own theatre, but the big problem was NO ROOM IN LONDON AT ALL for it and we did want to start there! Since things Arent finalized, anything can change, but the possibility of major involvement & funding from SONG/BMG or WARNERS, artistic involvement of ILM in their FIRST stage venture, and Stephen Clarke all make me really stoked. As far as financing goes, all is ahead of schedule!

Jim Steinman began his career in musical theatre with The Dream Engine, and later wrote Das Rheingold, More Than You Deserve and Neverland. Three songs from Neverland – “Bat out of Hell”, “Heaven Can Wait” and “The Formation of the Pack,” retitled “All Revved Up With No Place to Go” became the beginnings of the album “Bat Out of Hell.”

Steinman wrote also wrote the following hit songs:

  • “Total Eclipse of the Heart,”
  • “Making Love out of Nothing at All,”
  • “I’d Do Anything for Love (but I Won’t Do That)”
  • “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.”
He also had an infamous legal battle with Meatloaf over the name Bat Out of Hell.

Bat out of Hell the musical
promises to be a big hit with West End theatre goers but then again, Wicked is going to be a hard act to follow!

    1. please email me details asap re meat losf / bat out of hell musical!

    2. Okay,

First, It’s Meat Loaf, not Meatloaf.

Second, Meat Loaf (Marvin Aday) didn’t write Total Eclipse of The Heart with Jim Steinman (nor do I think he wrote anything at all. I may be mistaken). He didn’t even sing “Total Eclipse”. The “turn around bright eyes” was sung by Rory Dodd. (Also sang “Surfs Up”, “Lost Boys And Golden Girls”, and “Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through” [Although he was uncredited on the last one])

:) Sorry to sound bossy but I’m a huge Steinman fan and I like every thing told right :)

    3. Thanks for the heads up Savannah. I’ve updated the post.
