I’m thinking what to do for our Viking display in year3. This longship might be a good starting point. I’ve done it before, when I was working in year 3 last, the year before this one was made, but I don’t seem to have a photo of it. The shields are paper plates than the sail is a painted sheet. Making the prow was great fun the year we did it and I know someone in year 3 who draws great dragons! I’ll post the photo in a few weeks when we move back to our old classroom.
Update: 2007. I’ve moved on but my replacement will be starting this display soon. (These are for you Janet!) So here are a few photos to show the display in progress.
The prow is made with crumpled brown tissue paper soaked in diluted PVA (1:3) stuck onto card - we had a good chat about why Vikings had a beast at the front of the ship whilst we did this:

The boat is painted paper and the sail is painted cloth. (I kept our sail - try the store cupboard)

The 3d effect is enhanced by making a card support to attach the boat to the board. It involved some creative use of the staple gun and a cunningly hidden cardboard box stapled to the middle of the board

February bulletin board, originally uploaded by hale_popoki.
We don’t do this in the UK at all. The 100th day of school passes unremarked. Tina’s bulletin board display is all the more interesting for this reason.
For the Classroom displays group…..
Although this actually isn’t a classroom display.
It’s a bulletin board in a school hallway.
And yes, it’s no longer February……February was so insanely busy for me that I didn’t get around to taking these bulletin board pics and downloading them until the end of February. (At least I managed to get shots of it! I was going to take photos of my January bulletin board, but completely forgot……when I finally remembered, the next teacher assigned to it had already taken it down.)
Each of the classroom teachers at my school is assigned a school bulletin board for each month. Because our school is a multi-level school and some bulletin boards are in locations with a lot of foot traffic while others are more isolated, we have a rotation system.
My February board was in a high-visibility area, so I didn’t meet my half hour or less rule……I decided that it would be nicer to die-cut the letters.

Here’s a colourful classroom display using the children’s explorations of materials. I really like the use of the blue background on this. It shows the weaving up very clearly. Some of the of the lettering doesn’t work so well though. I can see that it was meant to use different materials for each letter it just didn’t quite come off in the photo. It works much better on the classroom wall.
