The Snow Queen Rides

This display could be just the work of a talented TA or it might have been made with help from children. How much value does this sort of display have in the classroom?

I interviewed some children about their thoughts on the making of this image (from Classroom Displays in Primary, LM Hartley, 2005)

This is a lovely example of a classroom display drawn from a favourite story. There are quite a few of these in the group. They always provoke some discussion. One of the things that surprised me in my research last year was how highly children valued this sort of display. Making something like this can seem like ‘non-educational make work’ to some adults but children I interviewed were proud to have been involved in creating something they saw as beautiful. They felt it enhanced their self-esteem and increased their feelings of ownership of the classroom.

Kidergarden Rules

I like these. They are clear and easy to understand even for a small child. The only thing I’m not so keen on is that there’s nothing positive on here. Bad behaviour is clearly defined and consequences spelled out but what about good behaviour? There’s no reward – just the absence of bad consequences.

Anti-bullying

We tend to put lots of emphasis on stopping bullying. We don’t do very much with classroom rules. We tend to have each class make posters about their own classroom rules and those are displayed for the first few weeks of term. What seems to happen in some USA schools looks quite interesting. It’s certainly clearer for the kids what is and is not acceptable. See the next two posts for examples.
