Aggregating Flickr Edu content

development No Comments »

Using the Flickr Wordpress plug in I’ve effectively created a page that aggregates all the photos of the Flickr groups I belong to that relate to education.

Scroll down the usefulwiki photo album page past my own content and you can access the photo pools of any of the education related groups I’m a member of. They can be viewed right here in usefulwiki along with any comments that relate to them. Cool :-)

Can’t switch users easily for the photos but choosing ‘everyone’ and using a unique tag like BetterReadingPartners seems to work.

Not sure why the words on the second line of this post are oddly spaced…

Flickr plugin installed

Ok, I installed the wordpress flickr plugin as requested, and linked it to my photo albums to test. This allows easy retrieval of flickr photos for blogging

Since this is a multi-author blog Linda will probably have to remove the link to my photos in the “configure” page for the plugin  and link it to her own.

which plugins?

I’d like this flickr plug in please

This plugin will also add a new Photos tab (next to the existing Upload tab) in your WordPress edit screen which will allow you to easily insert your Flickr photos into your blog posts with just a couple clicks (much like the Flickr Post Bar plugin). Your inserted photos will then be linked back to your WordPress Flickr photo album.

I use this all the time on the other blog and it could be helpful here too.

Autosave doesn’t always work - lost a whole post tonight :-(

maybe the youtube one - not sure where you get it but it sits in your post toolbar & lets you add youtube videos to blog posts with one click. Might be good for screencasts on how to edit the wiki?

democracy poll is good

and can we have a nicer header with the logo in please?

I’ve made this post published but private now. Wonder what that does?? On my other blog it means you can only see the post if you are logged in as admin. Does that work the same here? Not that it really needs to be private.

BRP - parents page

I’ve just used a fact sheet that I made a couple of years ago as the basis of this new page. I’m going to invite someone who has been a parent of a child on the programme to have a look at the page tomorrow and see if she’d like to add anything.

BRP year 5 & 6 contributions- children want a voice!

So there I was merrily adding stuff to the wiki today when an ex-Better Reader looked over my shoulder and said:
“When are you going to ask us to add what we thought of it Miss?”

A very good question! So I thought I’d take a couple of groups from Years 5 & 6 on the wiki over the next few days and get them to add their thoughts. Children in my current (soon to be ex) school are used to being asked for their thoughts about their learning, especially by me! It’s been part of my role as research assistant for the last 3 years to make sure that children’s voices are heard so why stop now?

Choosing Books

I’ve added some advice and explanation to this page today as well.

Mailing list progress

I’ve been collecting e-mail addresses and asking if people want to get involved and the response has been quite positive in school. I’m still not sure if it should be a Google group or something owned by usefulwiki. We need to decide soon!

So all in all a good day :-)

useful wiki logo Here’s the first attempt at a logo, based on the rlgrey mediawiki skin. I quite like it but how might it be improved?

Here it is again with .com added

lindavatar Hi, I’m Linda and I’m going to be looking after much of the content at usefulwiki. I’m starting by adding a bit of what I’ve learned over the last 4 years of using a ‘real books’ scheme called Better Reading Partners.

A ten week intervention programme to improve the reading skills of children reading just below average. It works best for children whose reading age is about a year below their chronological age. These are often children who have some grasp of the mechanics of reading but have not ‘taken off’ as independent readers.

andy robertsMy name is Andy and I’m providing the technical stewardship for this usefulwiki community. So I’ll be posting news to this blog about the development side of things, as well as pointing out any pertinent news items from time to time.

The important thing to remember about usefulwiki is that this site is not like any other educational resources website which serves learning in the UK and beyond. We don’t ask you send us in your plans, resources, stories and links - we allow you to put them onto the site yourself by editing the wiki.
